New User Orientation

Safety Rules

  1. Never work alone.
  2. Call 100 (from campus phone) or (617) 253-1212 in case of life-threatening or fire emergency.
  3. Call the lab staff during normal working hours or 3-1500 after hours to report and request help for a building malfunction or non-life-threatening emergency.
  4. You must be trained and qualified by an MTL staff member before Using any piece of equipment in the labs.
  5. Safety glasses are to be worn in the labs at all times. If you wear contact lenses, you must wear safety glasses over them.
  6. Feet and legs must be covered under your cleanroom garments. Sandals, shorts, open-toe shoes and/or skirts are not allowed. Your skin must be covered for your own protection.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the hazards associated with the chemicals in use in the labs by reading the MSDS sheets which are located at the entrances to the ICL, TRL, and EML. Some of the chemicals in use may include select carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and substances with a high degree of acute or chronic toxicity.
  8. Read the MTL Chemical Hygiene Plan (PDF file).
  9. Be aware of all correct working and emergency procedures in the lab. If you don't know, ask!

Building 39 Evacuation Procedure

  1. Exit through the nearest doorway.
  2. Do not remove your cleanroom garments or lab coats.
  3. Exit the building Using the nearest stairway: do not use the elevators.
  4. Proceed to the South side of Building 34, if weather permits. If the weather is inclement, then congregate inside the lobby of building 34.
  5. In the event that Building 34 is inaccessible, instead proceed to the Vassar St side of building 37, if weather permits. If the weather is inclement, then congregate inside the lobby of building 37.
  6. Do not re-enter Building 39 until you are given permission to do so by an authorized person.
